Gate Automation Across Lancashire
Automating a gate typically costs £1,800 to £4,500 depending on gate weight, run length and whether power already reaches the post, and most installs are finished in one to two days. John fits underground and articulated ram kits from FAAC, Came and Nice to existing timber, steel and composite gates as well as new builds, wiring in keypads, intercoms and remote fobs so the gate opens from the car, the house or a visitor's phone.

Safety and Insurance
Automated gates are safety-critical installs. Every gate John automates, installs or services is checked against BS EN 12453, the standard that limits how much pressure a closing gate can exert, so it cannot close unsafely on a car, a pet, or a child.
Force settings, photocells and safety edges are checked against DHF (Door and Hardware Federation) guidance on every job, whether that is a new automation install or a routine annual service.
John the Gate Man carries public liability insurance covering all installation, servicing and repair work carried out on site, standard for every job regardless of size.
What's Included
- 01
Site survey
John visits the property to check gate weight, ground conditions, power routing and the safe swing or slide path before quoting a fixed price.
- 02
Kit selection
Motor type (underground, articulated ram, or sliding) is matched to the gate rather than sold off a price list, so the mechanism lasts under daily use.
- 03
Install and wiring
Ducting, power and control wiring are run to the post, the motor is fitted and calibrated, and force settings are tested against BS EN 12453.
- 04
Handover
Remotes, keypad codes and app access (where fitted) are set up on site and John talks the owner through daily use and manual override.

Learn MoreGate Automation FAQs
Most domestic gate automation jobs across Lancashire run £1,800 to £4,500 fitted, depending on gate weight and whether mains power already reaches the post. John gives a fixed price after a short site visit, not a phone-quoted guess, so there are no surprises on the invoice.
A straightforward single or double gate automation is usually a one to two day job from arrival to handover. Runs needing new power cabled from the house or a longer ducting trench can take an extra day, which John will flag at the survey stage, not on the day.
In most cases the existing gate can be automated as it stands, provided the frame is sound and the hinges or track can take the load of a motor. John checks this at the free site survey and will say plainly if reinforcement or a new gate is the safer option rather than force-fitting a motor to a tired frame.
Every automated gate John fits has a manual release so it can be opened by hand during a power cut, and battery backup is available as an option for anyone who needs the gate to keep working through a short outage.
Underground motors sit hidden below the gate and suit period or listed properties where visible hardware is unwelcome, while articulated rams are quicker to fit, easier to service and cope better with mud, grit and standing water on rural driveways. John recommends based on the site, not a fixed preference.
Yes. Automated gates fall under BS EN 12453, the safety standard that limits how much pressure a closing gate can exert, because an untested gate can close on a car, a pet or a child. Force settings, photocells and safety edges are set up to this standard as part of every install, not an optional extra.
Yes, intercom posts, video entry units and keypad code entry are fitted as part of the same visit as standard, wired into the same control system as the gate motor so visitors and residents both work from one setup.
Most current motor systems support an app or GSM module that opens the gate from a phone, useful for buzzing in deliveries or tradespeople without leaving the house. John will confirm which control options suit the chosen motor at the survey.
Slopes and uneven ground are common across Lancashire and are usually accounted for with the right motor type and mounting, though a very steep or badly rutted approach may need groundwork before the gate is fitted. This is checked at survey stage.
Yes, John fits automation to residential driveway gates, farm and field entrances, and small commercial sites, sizing the motor and control gear to the actual gate weight and duty cycle rather than a one-size-fits-all domestic kit.
An annual service check on the motor, hinges, force settings and safety edges keeps an automated gate running reliably and catches wear before it becomes a breakdown. See Gate Servicing for John's standing maintenance visits.
